Harnessing the power of the human face

Harnessing the power of the human face

Advisors know the cornerstone of success lies in customer satisfaction. A powerful, yet commonly overlooked tool a fresher may be helpful on is the human face. The human face is a dynamic canvas, displaying a constant stream of emotional cues through expressions. Understanding these expressions, especially the seven considered universal across cultures, can improve interactions.

These are what's considered the seven universal expressions:

  1. Happiness: This is recognized by an authentic smile that reaches the eyes, raised eyebrows, and softened corners of the eyes. The accompanying body language often includes an open posture, relaxed muscles, and increased eye contact. This expression typically conveys joy, contentment, or amusement.

  2. Sadness: Identifiable by drooping eyelids, lowered corners of the mouth, a furrowed (often asymmetrical) brow, and a downturned head. Body language may include a slumped posture, crossed arms, and avoidance of eye contact. This expression usually represents grief, disappointment, or loneliness.

  3. Surprise: Notable features are raised eyebrows, wide-open eyes, an open mouth (sometimes with gasping), and a raised upper lip. The body language often involves a startled posture, hands raised, and the head slightly back, denoting astonishment, shock, or unexpectedness.

  4. Fear: Characterized by wide-open eyes, raised and often furrowed eyebrows, lowered mouth corners, and stretched nostrils. The body language consists of a tense posture, rapid breathing, sweating, and a retreat posture, suggesting apprehension, terror, or threats.

  5. Anger: Evidenced by clenched teeth, narrowed eyes, lowered brows, furrowed nose, and a tightened jaw. Body language might include a hunched posture, clenched fists, aggressive gestures, and a red face, indicative of frustration, rage, or hostility.

  6. Contempt: Distinguished by one-sided lip raising (smirk), one raised eyebrow, a wrinkled nose, and an averted gaze. Body language might include a tilted head, crossed arms, and a disdainful posture, conveying scorn, disapproval, or superiority.

  7. Disgust: Recognized by a wrinkled nose, an upper lip raised and curled, lowered brow, and grimacing. Body language might involve the head being turned away, experiencing nausea, or covering the mouth, representing aversion, repulsion, or sickness.

Though these core expressions are universal, their intensity, frequency, and subtle variations may vary. Observing body language in conjunction with facial expressions provides a deeper understanding.

To enhance your customer interactions:

  1. Read the signals: Train your eyes to identify these expressions. Recognizing these cues allows for a tailored approach, building trust, and rapport.

  2. Mirror the positive: When a customer portrays a positive expression, subtly mirroring their smile can amplify their happiness and strengthen the connection.

  3. Manage your expressions: Be mindful of your emotional state. Maintain a relaxed posture and open expression to project warmth and approachability.

  4. Pay attention to micro-expressions: These fleeting flashes of emotion can reveal hidden feelings.

  5. Use empathy and active listening: Go beyond facial cues and truly understand the person behind the expression.

Recognizing these expressions can help tailor your communication, build rapport, and navigate challenging situations effectively. By harnessing the power of the human face, you can build deeper connections, navigate challenging situations with ease, and ultimately elevate your interactions.
